Cracking Auckland’s growth issues
Join us as Minister Phil Twyford speaks about cracking Auckland's growth issues.
As New Zealanders, we are conflicted on growth. We welcome economic growth but policies and initiatives to address the growth of our cities cause anxiety. This anxiety leads to opposition to urban sprawl and density and creates NIMBYism and barriers for our cities. Therefore when we get population growth the market doesn’t respond to demand. This creates extremely high urban land prices and unaffordable housing. It also leads to failures to invest in transport infrastructure and has resulted in $1.3 billion a year in productivity being lost in Auckland’s gridlock. The Government has put together an ambitious reform plan to bring down the price of urban land and make urban land markets more competitive.
Hon Phil Twyford was born and raised in Auckland. He is the Labour Member of Parliament for Te Atatu, where he lives. Phil’s vision is for New Zealand to deliver hope and opportunity to all people. He is committed to fixing the housing and transport problems that affect our biggest city, as well as much of the rest of the country.
