Mr Chin Thean Quek was appointed as MD Asia Glencore in 2015, and was promoted to concurrently the global head of the company's liquefied natural gas (LNG) division in 2017. Glencore is one of the world’s largest diversified natural resource companies with operations in 35 companies. Its oil and gas division trades with volumes of around 5 million barrels per day with Asia accounting for about 30%. Chin Thean is a veteran and one of Asia’s most senior executives in the energy industry where he was previously global head for BP oil trading business, head of Goldman Sachs Asia commodities business and a Director at International Enterprise Singapore.
Hugh graduated from the University of Liverpool in 1987 with a Bachelor of Engineering (First Class) degree on a Singapore Armed Forces (Overseas) Scholarship. He holds a Master of Science (Management of Technology) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, United States of America, 1998.
Hugh joined the Singapore Armed Forces in 1984, and attained the rank of Brigadier-General on 1 Jul 2005. He has served in a variety of command and staff positions, including Chief Engineer Officer, Commander 6 Division, Commander Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) and Chief of Staff, General Staff.
Prior to joining BCA, Hugh was the Deputy Secretary (Community, Youth and Sports) at the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, and before that, the Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Law.
BCA is a statutory board under the Ministry of National Development of the Singapore Government. It was established on 1 April 1999 through the merger of the Construction Industry Development Board and the Building Control Division of the former Public Works Department.The primary role of BCA is to develop and regulate Singapore's building and construction industry.
He is married with three children, and has a keen interest in technology, sports and photography.
